Ten Rose Care Myths. My personal experience in growing roses for the past 30 years has been eye opening.
There is so much misinformation out there concerning roses that I felt compelled to write this clause .
I once read an clause on what bloom to grow in a cottage garden . I agree with most of it but when the author posit that you should leave roses out because they are difficult to grow he lost all believability for me .
No cottage garden is complete , in my humble opinion , without rose . That clause spurred me to compose this post on Ten Rose Care Myths !

Rose myth and wive tales are even repeated by commit authorities on gardening . Ask a variety of rosarians and you will get many answers , even some that battle .
My best advice …
hear it for yourself and cast out the rule ledger . Personal experience trumps established advice that does n’t fit your area .

If you read or someone tells you some garden tasks need to be done at a special time , find outwhy . If you love thewhythen you’re able to work out what may work out best for your mood and placement .

Rose Care Myth 1: Roses are difficult, time-consuming or fussy to grow.
entire bunk ! rose are not at all hard to grow .
If you have the right plant in the right place , good dirt , and a modicum of good gumption you’re able to grow fabulous roses .
I think this melodic theme that roses are hard to grow or take a raft of work comes from mass grow the wrong rose or expect perfection in blooms rather than overall beauty .

For deterrent example , I do n’t grow Hybrid Teas as they are not fearless here .
But there are loads of others that thrive in my location , are just as beautiful as intercrossed teas , are much more fragrant , and just about take care of themselves .
A good property to start is by require for recommendations from people who raise roses around your neighbourhood , local garden groups , etc .

Not all rose do well in every part of the country .
Seek out good garden rose that are baffling , disease - immune , and dependable . expert disease resistance starts with the character of rosebush .
The next is a sizeable plant . levelheaded plant develop good resistance systems as we do .

The Florida key to sizeable plant is well - fertilize soil and organic fertilizer . See the postHow to Build your Soil for information on how to accomplish that .
Rose Care Myth 2: Pruning is only done at certain times of the year.
Pruning varies according to your location and what you are assay to achieve so it motley dramatically .
Conventional pruning advice widely tossed about is meant primarily for Hybrid Teas and is passed down from when the roses were produce for show .
It was not meant for old roses , climber , etc . Here in California pruning is often done in January .
![]()
It is the coldest month of the year and though in many arena of California , the rose do not go fully dormant because of the mild climate it is the best clip since the job pests are not combat-ready .
I in reality must prune recent evenfall after a couplet of dependable icing to preclude breakage from snows and since it is already frigid enough I have no issues with new growth that can be damaged by the onset of cold in winter .
It is not trim alone that can encourage young increase , you also need the ripe temps and even solar day length can play a part .

I am not alone in this , here is a quote from a rosarian in Colorado that does the same : Once a pair of hard frost or freezes have run into the garden , the rosaceous bushes will start to go dormant and you could start on the next step in preparing roses for wintertime . This is the time to crop the canes on all the rose shrub , except the climbing rose , down to about half their height . This helps keep the canes from being broken over poorly by heavy winter nose candy or those nasty whipping wintertime winds .
I have an total post onpruning climb roseswhich you may find helpful .
find barren to shape your garden roses anytime like you would any other shrub in your garden . Trust your instincts and experiences with your plants .

Do n’t worry about make a fault , it will grow back ! Plus you do n’t even have to prune if you do n’t need to , the rose will survive without you .
At the David Austin get up gardens in England they apply hedge cutter to prune their hedge in roses just like you would a boxwood or yew hedge !
The only affair you do need to ensure and cut out is dead or diseased Mrs. Henry Wood . It just makes it front nice but even if you did not , it would not kill the plant if you left it alone .

Why do I roll in the hay that ? I have seen great deal of rose wine in abandoned cemeteries , farmstead , or fields that are growing and blooming away with total neglect .
Rose Care Myth 3: You need to seal the canes after pruning.
Most rose agriculturist I have spoken with tossed this out a while back . They found it unnecessary as it really did not process any better than letting well enough alone .
If you rationalize in late winter the bugs that cause a problem boring into cane are dormant . I never have sealed cane and I have never had much matter with borers .
Raspberry cane rock drill are one of the main worm that bore into rosaceous canes and they are not active until recent Spring .

Most do not prune in late Spring so there is no real need to seal off cane and it has been find that it can make more hurt than serious .
Rose Care Myth 4: Roses Take a Lot of Water
This is one myth I clung to for a long clock time . Everyone say they are water hogs . I found this one to be not precise the past 5 old age .
In California , we have been in a severe drought . Water restrictions have been imposed . I think my blush wine were fate .
Nope .
![]()
Because I have survey the body of water deeply rule rather than ofttimes my roses must have build up deep roots .
I have a rose on a hillside behind my home and it only got watered doubly during the past two summers .
It flower like a champ the intact time . It is a David Austin Rose called Sceptre d’Isle .

My other roses get minimal water as well . I get going to research it a bit and find that blush wine do bloom more prolifically if give ample urine but the amount is far less than most people opine .
I do mulch deep to keep as much moisture as I can from evaporating out of the soil so I roll in the hay that helps as well .
Rose Care Myth 5: They need a big planting hole.
No , they do n’t . Just dig it big enough to conform to the roots in without bunching .
I usually drudge two shovel fulls deep and 3 or 4 encompassing . piddle in , do n’t stomp , airwave pocket will be remove by the soil washing down with the water system .
It is not necessary nor advisable to lend starter fertilizersor other amendment to the planting hole . Topdressing with somecompostand mulch is sufficient . Nutrients will percolate down when you irrigate or as it rain down .
The abstract thought that researchers have found is that if you put the food in the planting fix the roots have no motivation of branching out to encounter some thus curtailing the root growth .
We want the roses to send out long antecedent , it is what is best for a healthier plant !
Rose Care Myth 6: Roses are heavy feeders.
I acquire more roses than I can count and I do n’t fertilize them anymore than I do my other efflorescence . I distribute my well - composted chicken manure munificently in the Fall and I useAgrothriveduring the Summer .
Agrothrive is constituent and has another benefit , it feeds the micro-organism in your grunge along with your plant . See my post on building your soil and you will see why feeding your soil is so important . It also saves money !
I will always go back to good soil as the main ingredient to successful gardening . A super gentle top dressing that works great isWorm molding .
They are mythical on rose as well as other plants but if you have build your soil you will have mess of worms already but in the meantime , if you want to top dress with somethingWorm Castingsare the ticket .
Rose Care Myth 7: Roses take a lot of space
rose amount in all cast and size . They can be used as earth cover , permit to ramble up into Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , along walls , fences , and made into hedges .
There is a rose that gibe just about any place ! Many will even uprise in batch .
I love how David Austin roses website lists different roses for different spot , they enjoin you if a rose is suitable for hatful , creating a hedge or if it can become a climber .
( many of their shrub roses are so intrepid in the US that they get much tall than in the UK so you could treat them as a crampon )
The Tess rose I showed how to Pillar is one and you may see from the picture in that post that it buzz off very , very tall.click here to view that office How to Pillar a blush wine
Rose Care Myth 8: Roses need to be sprayed frequently for pests and fungus.
I garden organically . When you permit nature balance itself then practiced bug will help keep bad bugs in check .
In early Spring I get a needled nose mallet that makes holes in my rosebuds , I handpick them betimes each morning or tap them off of my plants into a cup of oily water .
Once the initial outbreak is over then I have no more difficulty the rest of the time of year .
Did you know that roses can build unsusceptibility to the local fungus if you let them ? They carry natural kingdom Fungi on their leaf that are beneficial , it helps to curb disease .
But if you spray you will kill those respectable fungus and make the industrial plant more susceptible to blackspot and other problems .
If you start with disease - insubordinate rose wine you’re able to avoid many problems . Only spray with an constitutive answer if the trouble is kill the plant and not just so the rosaceous plant bet better .
Never , and I mean NEVER use systemic products . These rely on neonicticide that vote out not only Bee populations but now it has been receive that wild birds are being harm . See ‘ Brobdingnagian Decline in Songbirds Linked to Common Insecticides ‘ .
Rose Care Myth 9: You have to cut at a 45 degree angle when pruning.
There are motley reason given why this myth was even started . One is about sap seeping out of the cane make egress ( never consider any come from my roses ever and I have been produce them for 30 + years ) and another is piss sit on a cane causing hogwash .
Both have been proven false .
Rose Care Myth 10: Adding Epsom Salts to your soil will increase bloom and health of your Roses
Nope ! I have tested this one and it did not change a matter . It is the magnesium in the Epsom Salts that is supposed to be the ticket here andunlessyou have magnesium inferior dirt the chances of creating problem with Epsom salts are great than it help .
If you fertilise your grease with unspoilt constitutive drill there is no need for this linear though many are adamant about using it .
Truth be told it is not the panacea you are seeking . Also , be aware that overuse can actually pollute waterways and harm beneficial organisms in our filth . I wrote an total clause with scientific credit here on the use of Epsom Salts in the Garden
For me , it is better for the Epsom Salts to go in my hot bath piddle to ease my aching muscles from all that gardening than on my roses .
One more time … … Good soil is always the best start point . If you are new to horticulture that should be your first anteriority .
How to Regenerate Your Soil
apply less fertilizer and mature intelligent plant that need less piss and pampering .
If you have really bad grunge roses can grow in locoweed too . Some perform better than others in locoweed so appear for one noted to do so .
Happy Rose Growing .
