Scent in the Garden. July.
I am a spot late in the calendar month but I did n’t want to rent July drop away by without recording some of its luscious fragrance . There are still some lovely scent in the garden even thought the first kick of roses and lily is over . The Regales and Madonna and Martagon lilies were fantastic despite having tatty leaf because of lily beetle . I ca n’t imagine why I forgot to show them in last month ’s Scent in the Garden ; what an lapse .
Lilium regale
Lilium regaleis very easy from seed and bourgeon readily . They bloom in a couple of years ; three at the most . They smell absolutely luscious . Sadly they have finished now , I really must stop showing you June flowers when we are supposed to be talking about July .

Lilium regale
Anyway , we do have some beautiful July lily out now . First of all I ’d care to show you the strange little Turk ’s pileus , Lilium lankongensefrom China .
genus Lilium lankongense
I have the heavily sweet-scented Lily ‘ Golden Splendour ’ out now . I had forgotten to stake it and I receive it sprawling all over the tree peony . What a lovely surprise .

Another Lily which comes back each yr to delight is the tall Oriental x Trumpet Lily ‘ Robert Swanson ’ . It has a terrific scent too .

I still have a few roses scenting the garden . The wonderful , very fragrant David AustinRosa‘Summer Song ’ is blossom again and ‘ Grace ’ is blooming away as merrily as she was in June . Last yr I bribe a rose recommended by Sarah Raven . She state it is one of the near pink ones for blame . It is very fragrant too . It is a deep pink one called ‘ Princess Alexandre ’ .
Trachelospermumhas an absolutely gorgeous olfactory property and I have several dot about including a golden one , Trachelospermum asiaticumin a pot by the pond .

I am not keen on the scent of Jasmine in the sign , it is too syrupy but I like it growing against the wall where I just catch a whiff of it as I take the air past . Jasminum officinale‘Clotted Cream ’ is a very pretty one and in fact it is just the colour of Cornish clotted cream .

Lilium‘Robert Swanson’
Clematis flammulawhich has the common name of ‘ Virgin ’s Bower ’ , has masses of small starry efflorescence which are deliciously fragrant . I have it growing up an one-time Plum tree . I first read about it in a Vita Sackville West book years ago ; she said it smell musty but I find it sweet . She also state that it flowers in September but mine is in heyday now .
Clematis flammula
Sweet Peas are so well-off from seed , I expect most of us have them blossom away as long as we commend to pick them regularly . The scent is rattling but I am always frustrated that they do n’t last very long in a vase . I have purplish and lily-white ones but I ca n’t remember which diverseness I sowed now .

Lavender is wonderfully fragrant and I have them dotted round the garden , they are so easygoing from cuttings . The lavender hedgerow attack the patio is ‘ Hidcote ’ . It is a endearing benighted colour and is quite compact as long as you prune it properly which I ’m afraid I have n’t . I do it it even though I read somewhere that John Brookes said a lavender hedging is ‘ Old Ladyish ’ . What a buttock . I am not going to stitch lilac travelling bag or pat it behind my ears . The olfactory property always reminds me of Provence and that has nothing to do with former ladies . I also have a pink one calledLavendula angustifolia‘Loddon Pink ’ .

In sess I grow the South African light bulb , Albuca shawii . It is my favoutiteAlbuca , with pretty , nodding yellow heads . It smells sweet and perhaps a bit like anise seed , but not quite . It is very easy from seed .

Also in a stool , as it is not quite audacious , I have the lovely glowering red Chocolate Cosmos , Cosmosatrosanguineus . The velvety flower really do smell of chocolate .

The rest of my fragrant plants for this month have leaves that want to be crushed or brushed past to enjoy the olfactory property . I love the silver leafage and creamy buttons ofSantolina chamaecyparissus‘Lemon Queen ’ . It has an redolent scent .

Agastaches smell of licorice . I loveAgastache foeniculcum‘Golden Jubilee growing with some cheap and cheerful annualCalendula .

Even pretty is the orangeAgastache‘Summer sundown ’ .

Scented Pelargoniums have very redolent leave of absence . I have two ; the well - known ‘ Attar of Roses ’ , which is scrumptious and also one call ‘ Orange Fizz ’ which really does have the zingy odour of oranges .
I will finish with a plant which I keep in a pot by the back door because it reek of pure lemon when I brush past it . I keep it in the greenhouse in the winter because I do n’t think it is in full dauntless . It used to be calledLippia citriodorawhich was easy to recall , but it is now calledAloysia triphylla . It has brilliant green , narrow parting on tall upright halt . It relish a warm cheery spot .

The musical theme of a monthly meme for scented plants was one devised by Louise atWellywomanblog and Sue atBacklane Notebook . I would love to hear which fragrant implant other people are enjoying at the moment .

It must be wonderful to walk through your garden with all those scrumptious scents waft in the zephyr . I usually have to adhere my nose directly into a flower to have any prospect of overtake a olfactory property . It ’s also noteworthy to me to read that you have scented pea plant go strong at this time of year – mine ordinarily perish in the first heatwave ( which this year pass in March ) . The principle of thumb here is to plant seeds before Labor Day ( other September ) but I may plant them earlier still this year to ensure that I actually have an opportunity to delight them .
You have a wealthiness of scented plants . Here the Regale lilies are also over , but some Asiatics have not yet opened . As for roses , Astrid Lindgren is still beautiful . The strongest scent just now though is from Acidanthera bicolor murielae ( now Gladiolus callianthus ) .
Beautiful efflorescence with heady scent … as I weed I am noticing more scented foliage .

Trrachelospermum jasmioides
You ’ve many beautifully fragrant blooms ( and plants . ) The perfume of all season have their good luck charm but the summer fragrance are so rich and abundant .
Some fabulous scented works Chloris – some familiar and some unknown to me so will descend back to this post again with a notebook computer . I ’m like the face of Rosa ‘ Summer Sung dynasty ’ – the colouration of the flowers is most striking . Those lily beetles certainly have a mess to answer for . My lemon yellow verbena which has overwintered quite jubilantly in the greenhouse for several winter unhappily did not revert this year . I ’m missing stroking the leave-taking .
