By far the majority of glasshouse horticulture businesses in the Dutch province Limburg escaped by the peel of their teeth last weekend . The water came very close at times , but the ( emergency brake ) dyke held . Over the course of the calendar week , more will become clear about damage and other issues , although the implosion therapy of nursery does not seem to have occurred .

Top right in the photo are the nursery of Asian Crops . The water came very close , but thanks to the many volunteer and on the initiative of the enterpriser , the dykes were raised and reinforced .

And it hold , grower Danielle tells us . " Friday was tense . Because our greenhouse are relatively in high spirits up , we were quite convinced . If our glasshouse were to deluge , then a good deal of things would be flooded .

Nevertheless , the necessary precautions were strike . " We and our staff , who also hold up here in the street , helped tone up the dykes with equipment and workforce . "

The raiser remained on the farm and did not void . " We also worked ' as normal ' on Saturday and fortuitously the access roads remained approachable , so we were able to return our production . We even had to irrigate the nursery as usual . "

Damage repairChris , a salad agriculturalist from the Michiels - Theeuwen partnership in Wellerlooi , also narrowly bunk . He let us know that in between business organization on yesterday ’s busybodied Monday break of the day .

BB Plant from Lottum , just northward of Venlo , was not affected by the water either . " We ’re on a mound , 3 meter above the route " , says Eugene Beukers . " However , the water did come 100 metres closer . A luck of oeuvre has been done on the Meuse in late years . As a result , you see that areas that were never flood before can now all of a sudden become flooded , while other areas stay ironic . "

Jos Smits , tree and rose raiser just down the road in Broekhuizenvorst , was less fortunate . " There is a lot of wrong " , says the grower , who is busy putting his container field in decree . " We ’ll manage , that much is clear , but it continue to be seen exactly how much damage there will be . "

Horticultural businesses take initiativeJean Aerts , a board member of the Netherlands Glasshouse Horticulture Association and chairman of the Limburg area , cite Velden as one of the examples where things were very close-fitting to catastophe . " Entrepreneurs in that region took the enterprisingness and , with the assistant of the small town and the authorities , raised the dyke . With experience from 1993 and 1995 , when the water supply also came very eminent , they knew where the weak musca volitans were . "

From Thursday , preparations were typeset in motion , accord to Jean . " On Friday and Saturday we worked very intemperately . The gamey point was reached in the night from Saturday to Sunday . The hand brake dikes held .

For example , many horticultural business have had sandbags filled , forklift trucks used and heavy equipment deployed . " Parking spaces at grower ' premise were affected , but as luck would have it these are ' only ' troublesomeness compared to what could have pass off otherwise . "
