One of the many perks of having a job at a gardening magazine is visiting fabulous public gardens and getting to call it work
glad Friday GPODers !
For some added inspiration and colouring material to get us through the wintertime month , our site editor program , Christine Alexander , has gone through her own archives to portion out some awesome photos she ’s captured that have n’t set up their style to finegardening.com or the print magazine . To start , she ’s partake some shots she postulate while visit New England ’s big botanic garden .
I visitedCoastal Maine Botanic Gardenin Boothbay , Maine as part of the gang start to bring on the television Andy Brand did for us onDividing Perennials in Fall , which is definitely worth assure out ( and doing as well ) ! I was so amazed by the garden that I end upshooting a telecasting about the park itself . Andy , the Horticultural Director for the garden , is a long - prison term contributor toFine Gardeningmagazine . you could see some of the manyarticles he has pen for us here .

The garden were succulent , colorful , and gorgeous – even in tardy October . There are various region of the botanic gardens , and I daresay you could spend a few days research the all-encompassing holding . Andy end up giving us an overview of a few of the most popular gardens , including the garden of the five senses , the children ’s garden , and the garden on the side . The penetration into how each of these gardens were designed and maintained were many . Andy also offered ideas for how to bring some of what makes these garden so special to your own garden and home . Aside from the gardens themselves , there are many programme for kids and adult alike , a yearly native plant sales agreement , and there are awful statue including the vast troll - the Guardians of the Seeds – design by Danish artist Thomas Dambo , which are so fun to look for for . Each troll has an accompanying narration and message that nipper and adults alike will apprise !
The photo below are just some of the unlike peck and vistas that seize my tending . You canwatch the television about these gardens here if you want to see more !
As Christine mention above , this trip happened in the tardy time of year but there was no famine of sensational colouring to be look up to . And this was n’t the fall color that you might first ideate when you cogitate about New England in autumn , but an dead exhilarating commixture of colourful flower .

Of course , you do n’t get far into CMBG without encountering some whim . Aside from the jaw - dropping troll statue that are an attractive force in themselves , there are tons of permanent carving throughout the grounds and infinite for art on exhibit . This adorable Arabian tea - work picket fencing can be witness in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children ’s Garden .
Can you believe all of this bright coloration was in salad days in late October … in MAINE ?
If it were n’t for the plume of ornamental sens and sprinklings of distinctively fall boo-boo like dahlias and marigolds , I would swear that Christine get these photos confused with a stumble she made in the summer .

More gorgeous grasses blow in the farting , and a glimpse of‘Wind Orchid ’ , another unbelievable carving that can be found a CMBG . This towering musical composition of art is made of sword by George Sherwood , an artist and engineer bed for his kinetic sculptures .
Also inside the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children ’s Garden is this sweetened structure with a ‘ living ’ or ‘ fleeceable ’ ceiling . Just in front you’re able to see the true cat fencing peek out from the flurry of yellow flowers .
Do you ever look at a planting and cerebrate the best word to describe it is “ fluffy ” ? That ’s precisely what I ’m fix from this combination ofJoe Pye weed(Eutrochium purpureum , Zones 3–9 ) flower andArkansas bluestar(Amsonia hubrichtii , Zones 6–8 ) leaf .

Located on more than 300 acres , CMBG spans such a large amount of space that each garden has a distinct and dissimilar style and vibration . Brighter , more vivacious plantings in other areas make way for calmer , moodier planting amongst pee feature in suspicious garden .
kaleidoscopical combination of bluff colors can be revel and compared to more advanced pairings of contrasting lite and benighted leafage and efflorescence .
Just about every color scheme , design way , and plant category can be find on display . No matter what your design preferences are , there is some inhalation you’re able to take away ( or flat up steal ) for your home garden .

gratefully , Christine took so many stunning picture of CMBG that we have a second batch to marvel at next week ! You did n’t think we ’d show off all these astonishing plantings but not a individual photo of one Dambo ’s infamous trolling statues would you ? Be certain to tune in next week for another installment from Christine , and I hope you all have a fabulous weekend !
