See the progress of this project from start to finish
Nanci Kerby sent in these great images of creating a Modern bottom in her Napa , California , garden .
It was a warmish February , so Mike and I decided to start our new daylily project ahead of time . We dug down a foot in our cadaver soil that was riddled with crab grass . While Mike continued dig out in preparation for water supply faucets , I spend a number of solar day , for a few hour at a clock time , sifting out the crab - grass root word and ascendant - able section . I ’m happy to say that we have had no crab grass replication .
We added many pocketbook of compost and manure and blend it all with the native clean soil . We rake it nicely , and the dogs , singular all along , were quite appreciative of a flabby new place to sit down that was warm and fresh .

When my simple - root day lily arrived from several online mama - and - pappa sellers , I wanted to be ready to plant them efficiently with some care to appearance . I achieve this by make screen shots of each heyday I buy so I would see color , pattern marking , and stature . I printed the shots small , then taped them to small patch of card stock . After creating a acceptable arrangement , I intercept them in spot . Thank goodness I did , because these day lily come in the post with no designation of color or anything besides their name , which can be very unnoticeable .
And now for the control grid ! Using bamboo control stick , I tied string to make 16 dustup , numbered 1–16 , and three column ( A , B , and C ) . When a dispatch come , the plants all depend the same — just little unripe two- or three - leaf lover with roots . But I could await at a plant life ’s name , observe its home — say , 3B or 12A — and cognize where to plant it .
We dispatch the planting in the first weeks of March and then await for the May flowers to appear . They bloom at various multiplication , so I put the recent bloomers in the back . They are so pretty in bloom !
