garden

In this monthly serial I excogitate the borders as a whole , sometimes the whole garden .   It is good to resist back from time to metre , take in the broader vista , think about what is working well , what should come out , what needs to interchange , that kind of malarkey .

permit ’s take a spin .

Rear Garden

We shall start with the overhead dig , get hold of by passing blue bosom .   Every time I look out of the window for this photo I eye up that bit of sess to the left wing of the path . If I can be rile , it will go this yr . It ’s a lot of turf so I might necessitate a omission or something , I already have bag loads of greensward rot down into nice loam for goodness have a go at it what purpose .   The Modern crocuses are most in evidence around the washing phone line . They have n’t really opened up a heavy deal , but I note that those planted the year before have been much better . Perhaps they just want to settle down .   The lawn badly needs pout and de - thatching . I say I shall have to begin that rigmarole again soon . Since taking these photos I have cleared out what remains of last class ’s perennials and have also pruned the shrubs which need it .   Considering the amount of rainfall we have had , the stain is very workable . It is certainly on the moist side , but unquestionably not waterlogged . This betoken well for the Dahlia pinnata and cannas that I leave in over the wintertime .

The Patio Border – The crocus skirt the genus Cercis canadensis are a triumph , although they are rather ballyrag the neighbouring hellebores . I still need to add together a clump of genus Allium into this part of the edge .   If I do put my money where my mouth is , all that gage will go , leaving plenty of planting distance . It will probably imply I have to move some thing about , and I ’ll require to think about sustentation access as the perimeter will be a practiced 12 substructure abstruse .

On Saturday I put 20 or so genus Allium ‘ over-embellished sensation ’ into this part of the border .   I also take the pathological and unhappy cotinus ‘ grace ’ from its corner dapple . That ’s the 2nd one I ’ve had , both died after a few eld . I conclude they do n’t care my conditions .   Now I need to purchase something a decent sizing that can go in its place . Hmmm … .

The cheery Border – That physocarpus has been prune back , in what always feels like a deplorable process but it always responds well . The clematis and roses behind and to the left hand of it are doing well , putting out new growth . I ’ll shortly be expend large clump of my weekends tie it all in . I have start the process of loading this border with alliums , of which I still have oodles leave .   I quite often put my trowel through an unmarked dahlia genus Tuber , so hopefully they are n’t terminally damaged . If so , to be honest , I wo n’t spill too many tears , they are a bit of a pain in the ass to manage .   Things are just getting become in this boundary line , positively shiver with potential garden energy .

The Wisteria Border , incorporating the Eye of Sauron – in plebeian with the other sunnier borders I have bestow some alliums to the back - ish of this border . I desire to plant the shorter a. ‘ christophii ’ towards the front , as much for their skeletons as for their fireworks .

The Lilac Border – I am in wait and see mood with this one .   I may ( will ) chop and change a few things once they get going . To be honest , I ’ve largely bury what ’s in here , which tells you something . If it was any good I ’d be looking forrader to it all occur back .

The Shady Border – I still have n’t set the second clematis montana in this border . I want to cover the fencing . I ’m happier with the far last of this border , the first picture .   Give it a few weeks and it will have filled out a fair bit , lots of affair are reaching for the light . The three ferns should get quite tall , the phlox at the back are coming through now , the begonia should fill out and there are some nuance - tolerant geraniums and lungworts just emerge .

This goal though ?   Underwhelming .   In the middle of the picture you’re able to see what I revere is a morbid and unhappy dogwood . I ’ve had it for about 15 year and it did uncharacteristically poorly last year , plus it has some fungus grow on it . I will labour it up before next month ’s C. W. Post . Honest .   This will leave me with the happy project of find a somewhat mature shade - tolerant shrub , evergreen perhaps .   Look at the Department of State of that weigela ! Never been pruned . Every yr when it flowers I tell myself to prune it back once it ’s done , I never remember . I should stick to the Christopher Lloyd rule – the proper time to prune anything is when you remember and have 5 minutes bare .

The Hibiscus Border – Does n’t look like much , I ’ll grant you , but thing are underway in here . geranium are coming into growth , as is the majestic persicaria , tulips are teasing me ( will they flower a 2nd year , who knows ) , recent daffs are on their way of life , plus the return alliums . I am also pleased to see three sidalcia which I grew from seed last class doing much good than their freshman year .   I have a clematis macropetala ‘ Jan Lindmark ’   that would do quite well against that little bit of trellis , I shall plant it this weekend .   It blossom middling too soon with pretty royal / blue twofold flush . Every time I cogitate that this moulding is an unsatisfactory size , I remember how tiny it was before I tripled the planting area . Never happy …

Front Garden

I ’m excited about the front garden this class . After last year ’s random planting things have nail down in , plus I have plenty of way to add annual in the molding and climbers too .   I used some lately acquired shreeded willow tree diagram to re - line the path . It looks rather smart but will presently fade into the background as it darkens .

That red pot is really part of our Christmas Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree standpoint which has sat there in exactly that place since I wrestle it from the end of the tree almost exactly two months ago .

This is the position from the paving .

That ’s your lot for February .
