garden

After the last Border Patrol inAugustI resolved to do something about Border 6 , the smallest border in the back garden .   It is just 2 feet mystifying and perhaps   5 feet long .

It had become overrun by a giant solidago , or goldenrod .   This plant life looked telling for a while , and the bees certainly appreciated it , but it ’s a thug and could become a problem if I depart it be .   I ’ve charge it to the council green bin .

Once I had removed that , there did n’t seem much pointedness to the stay planting , so I dug nearly all of it out .

lilac , lychnis coronaria , a wilted genus Eryngium , all came out , as did a few pot .   I left a few bedraggle genus Helenium in place – they had been barricade out by the genus Solidago , I hope they ’ll do well now with a bit of light , and they should be fine next yr . I mulch with a thick stratum of garden compost and used some more in each planting hole . I had a half - hearted attempt to position the plants whilst still in their pot .

My weapon of selection for planting out is my fence - station pickle excavator , which makes very short oeuvre of a good sized planting trap . I lately carry an armory of plants waiting for space to plant out , so I had plenty to choose from .   From left to right wing , here ’s what I eventually put in the undercoat .

Thuggish brute

Three heuchera ‘ Palace purple ’ . As I was planting the third it occurred to me to see if I could divide .   I could !   I plant one of three divisions and potted up the other two for another sentence .

Penstemon ‘ terrace wine ’ go in next , at the back .   It ’s done efflorescence now , more or less , but should come back hard next yr .   I have cuttings , just in case .

Gaura ‘ passionate pink ’ , in front of the penstemon A raw plant to me , look frontward to this doing its thing for months next summertime . It is still flower a little now , and I have cuttings brewing in the greenhouse .

Curtains for you, goldenrod.

Geum ‘ entirely tangerine tree ’ was next , with Echinacea ‘ Chunky purpleness ’ in front of that .   I have cuttings of the genus Geum too – do you detect a pattern ?

I added a few spare helenium to the existing clump to bulk it out a bit , then a genus Tiarella ‘ pinkish skyrocket ’ . This is not a industrial plant I ’ve grown before , so I ’m looking forrard to seeing it come on .

I did this planting in a rush , in between heavy showers and bring in chutney , so have not put a slap-up lot ( any ! ) of thought into the planting . I ’m just go to see if it work , I can always move thing around if needed .   I ’ve go away a petty space at the front to grant for growth and potentially some annuals in the spring .   I may also expand this border , although that would take moving the washing line . thrifty stakeholder direction ask .

Meh. Dig the lot up.

For now , at least I wo n’t have to depend at that genus Solidago when it ’s meter to do the September Border Patrol in a twain of weeks .

I ’ll be back soon , with more propagating banter .
