My fellowship was motivate home , and we — myself , my husband , and our son and girl — couldn’t have been more frantic . We were head back to the country where we belong , with more farm brute than people , no red lightness to be spoken of and no big - boxful stores in sight . corn field rise across from our new house with cows next door , and only 10 houses remain on this pure country route . With 7 acres and a home unlike any other , this was our happiest minute in a foresightful clip . We were in our own picayune slice of heaven .
As we adjusted to our novel direction of life , we headed to the farm - supply store to catch a few things for the garden . At the store , we could hearchickspeeping from every quoin just waiting to chance new homes . Unfortunately , we went home empty - handed and a little sad . However , on our agency out , my husband suggested that we do some research , so we purchasedHobby farm : channelize to Chicken Breeds . As much as it anguish me to say , my husband was correct : We needed to research chickens before we jumpstart in with both feet .
When we get home , I was so excited to read the magazine that I read through it doubly ! I was surprised how much there was to hear about the dissimilar breeds . I spend the next few day with highlighters and pens marking each breed in the powder store that I thought would be a in effect choice for us . It really come down to three breeds that I thought would be great for our needs and clime : Brahmas , Australorpsand Orpingtons .

Armed with this entropy , I began call up every farm - supply store within an 60 minutes ’s drive from our home asking if they had these breeds usable . I would call weekly and sometimes even day by day to see what they had available . I phone enough that I started to know the names of some of the employee . Finally , I found Brahmas and Australorps . We arrived at the storage with the understanding that we would only get six chickens : three Brahmas and three Australorps . We end up buy 12 : six Buff Orpington pullets , four Australorp straight - runs and two Brahma straight person - runs . This , I now know , is what they call volaille mathematics . Carrie Miller
We set up a incubator in the garage , and we were exigent volaille farmer . look back on that moment , I creep over how short we really knew . A few day later , we had to go get more volaille feed and we returned home with six Leghorn pullets . ( Oh , how I love chicken mathematics ! ) To domiciliate our acquire flock , my husband and boy build up a with child Quaker - flair chicken chicken coop from solid rough - cut lumber .
As our boo arise , they each receive a name , and we patiently waited for them to start lay . In the dip , we acquired some retired show Gallus gallus — a few Polish hens and a Silkie — from a friend of a friend who was downsize their chicken flock .

Fast forward to 2016 : We now have more than 100 chicken . How did this happen ? Of naturally , some was by chicken mathematics , some were rescues , some were cool breeds that we just had to purchase , some were meat chickens and some we incubate ourselves .
I am so beaming we moved home , and I ca n’t even imagine life without all these crybaby . Who would have think three years ago that this would be my aliveness today ? Certainly not me , but I would n’t deepen it for the world .
