Do you ever wish you had certain self-sufficiency skills to live a more simple life?

Self - sufficiency attainment are also known as hobbies , to most people these days . This is because our social club has become so pendent on retail as a way of life to obtain goods and service need to live .

But what would happen if these supermarkets , malls , and Wal Marts all vanished into thin breeze ? Would we survive without easy memory access to the necessities ?

My family would survive.

I ’m very fortunate to have develop up in a fellowship where self - sufficiency weigh then and still count today . My mother teach me ego - sufficiency skills I can pass on to my daughter .

My mom   learned from her female parent ( my grandmother ) . My grandmother learned from HER female parent ( my smashing grandma ) . How rattling the chain of noesis is when we can read from those before us ! I value this knowledge so much as it helps my class and me onour journeying to self - sufficiency .

Here are 5 main lessons in self-sufficiency my mother taught me.

Gardening & Preserving

Gardeningwas always mom ’s favored acquirement .   I can still feel her passion for working in thedirtclear as 24-hour interval .

We had aHUGE syndicate garden . She had us small fry – and dad – out there kicking and screamingpulling weedsand pickinggreen dome .

We may have make a good deal ofheadachesfor her . specially when dad “ accidentally”tilledup the beets each year . It ’s o.k. . Grandma supplemented our lack of beet provision to make up for it .

5 Self-Sufficiency Skills

No doubt there were many things I ’d rather be doing than living in the garden all natural spring , summer , and fall . But I watch so much from my mamma . I learned different proficiency to produce the complete garden vegetable .

Our hard work pay off when we pull ahead awards at thecountyandstate fairsfor our garden produce .

I learned different ways to use up the extra garden produce .

5 Self-Sufficiency Skills

mamma   always kicked off the harvest season with creamy unexampled peas and potatoes . We ate many bushel   of green edible bean , sweet corn , and squash .   Dad learn me the art ofusing lots of cheesein recipes to improve the tasting of them .

I recollect foresighted days and night freezing sweetened corn and canning unripe beans and tomato . It was a lot of oeuvre . I can finally appreciate the skills I learned from her to make the most out of my garden green groceries .

Since my siblings and I have left their nest , mom got disembarrass of the vegetable garden . That point is now a pond with beautiful landscaping Gunter Wilhelm Grass and flowers for her and pappa to relax and   love . Luckily , I can avail supply them with fresh veg and fruits during the growing season when I visit .

5 Self-Sufficiency Skills

Cooking from Scratch

In the world of convenience and fast solid food , where did preparation go ? If I need you if you could fix from slit , would you rear your hand ?

I admit , when I went to college , I ate a bunch of gismo solid food . Not because I did n’t have the time to cook , but because it ’s what college kids did .

Since return to the farm , I ’m back to cooking from scratch again . Using farm fresh ingredient I grew here on the land the way my female parent taught me .

And using many of her recipe , too . I ’m grateful I can call her up sometimes if I take help with a formula to make it just like she always did .

Needle Work

This is a accomplishment I never had forbearance for . It is one I care I would have paid more aid to when ma tried to instruct me .

I ca n’t necessarily manufacture a consummate quilt , but I can work the basics . I can patch up or hem a couplet of jeans . Which is more than I could say for most woman .

Mom was patient to teach me that much !

Future goal : I would like to be able to learn more with this skill . Right along side my daughters .

Save & Reuse

I also want to instruct my daughters to save and reuse point . This skill has saved us money in our efforts to become more ego - sufficient .

Knowing how to relieve money and recycle items has help us to reach our own goals and get what we want .

My mama taught me that I could have anything I wanted if I had the imagination to be able-bodied to get it . I learned to save money to get what I wanted .

It   engage a lot of discipline to be able to hold open . It can also wrick into organize chaos if you are n’t thrifty .

But , it ’s easy to confuse “ preserve ” as construction welter or hoarding . Mom taught me to prioritize what I saved . Make certain there ’s a design for it .

You could reuse old magazines or push button for craft projects for the fry . Or those one-time wooden spoons would make awing garden marker ! Think outside the box with this one .

Organize reclaimable items intolabeled totesor container . Every few twelvemonth , go through these items . Sell what you do n’t need for some extra money . It ’s a winnings - win !

Be indisputable your old things   has a possible purpose before you keep them   around .

The Purpose for Livestock

My favorite self - sufficiency skill by far is caring for livestock . I received my very first calf and bottle lambs at an former age . The first acquirement I learn was deal for these fauna as they were my own .

As I became older , I acquire that beast have a bigger purpose once they reach the stage of their life . Feeding us a delightful and healthy protein to nourish us .

I did learn this the hard way . But , my mom learn me that we all have a purpose in lifespan . When we full make full that intention , our time on Earth is over .

farm animal ’s determination is to feed in us . I now fully understand this aim . And I will remain a carnivore for many years to come .

I can raise and feed chickens , goats , calf , hog and lambs to reap . Weharvest the chickensourselves , but send the other animate being to our local cabinet plant .

next Self - Sufficiency skill to learn : I need to learn to harvest my own great fauna here on the farm .

The Broken Chain

I learned 5 self - sufficiency acquirement from my female parent , who learned them from her mother . This is a chain that used to be very rough-cut among mothers and daughter .

alas , that range of mountains has been broken in our smart set . Daughters do n’t seem to be teach self - sufficiency   skills from their mother anymore .

Somewhere down the strand , my mother ’s and my generation have lost sight of take to learn and pass down self - sufficiency skill .

I want to take the meter to thank my mom for continue the chain . Thanks for teaching me to allow for for my family , mamma !
